What is an adverb?

Adverbs tell us about a verb. They express how someone does something or how something happens.

For example:

My mom drives slowly.


You can use adverbs before/after:

Verbs: The band played badly yesterday.

Adjectives: It was a really bad band.

Other adverbs: Some boys behaved very badly.

Whole sentences: Unfortunately, we were unable to extinguish the fire.


Formation of adverbs:

 

  • If the adjective ends with -y, the -y becomes -i:               happy                   happily (but: shy          shyly
  • If the adjective ends with -le, the -e disappears:              simple                  simply
  • If the adjective ends with -ic, -ally is appended:               basic                      basically
  • If the adjective ends with -ll, -lly is appended:                   full                         fully

1. Adjectives and adverbs that have the same form:

2. Not all word that end with –ly are adverbs. Some adjectives end with –ly too:

friendly
lovely
lonely
likely
silly
ugly
lively
elderly

 

3. Irregular formation

 

good                                                     well

The band is good.                              The band plays well.

4. Words with different meanings:

hard = hart, fast, schwer

It is hard to walk when the road is wet.

hardly = kaum, fast nicht

I can hardly understand you.

free = kostenlos

The ticket is free.

freely = unbehindert, frei (ohne Einschränkung)

You can walk freely because you no longer need a wheelchair.

late = spät, verspätet, zu spät

You were late for work.

lately = in letzter Zeit

I have been so busy lately.

short = kurz

We only drove for a short time.

shortly = bald, in Kürze

We will be there shortly.
